Dan’s Simple Green Smoothies

IMG_0241 - Version 3

Once upon a time, in The Candle Cafe in New York City, Dan and I enjoyed a nice breakfast and shared a green smoothie. This was back when we were trying to get prenant and I was still struggling a little with my new caffeine-free life. So rather than having a schmancy coffee, we asked the waitress to bring us their most popular smoothie. For years, Dan had perfected a flawless smoothie system in the morning involving multiple berry, vegan milks and fruit combinations. He brought into our lives what I like to call “A Smoothie Renaissance.”

She brought us a kale and pineapple gem that inspired a new era in our a.m. lives*. Since then Dan has recreated this blended masterpiece into an easy and fairly inexpensive  breakfast we enjoy on a regular basis. Green smoothies aren’t anything new in the vegan world but we’re often asked what we eat when we’re not deep frying Tofurkies or baking Vegan Macaroni and Cheese Pies. This simply lovely smoothie is the answer.

TIP: Only use fresh ingredients in this recipe not frozen. Canned pineapple is OK.

Dan’s Simple Green Smoothies

3/4 cup Orange Juice (you may need a little more or less depending on how thick you like your smoothies)
2 cups Raw Kale Leaves, unstemmed and chopped
2 Bananas
1/4 Large Pineapple, peeled (around 1 1/3 cups if you are using canned pineapple)

Blend Bananas, Pineapple and Orange Juice until smooth. Then add Kale a little at a time until completely blended.
