A Special Message from The Shannons

Thank You Cards from TinyPrints

So yesterday something kinda strange happened. We got what I am calling “Hate Mail”. It’s wasn’t from the usual Pro-Bacon-Hipsters or Eggy Mayo Loyalists who stumble in from time to time. It was numerous comments from people claiming to be readers who declared that they would stop reading our blog and tell their friends to join their “boycott” because we supported New York State’s historic marriage equality bill . The comments were pretty hateful actually and all offensive. Now, I have no idea who posted them. They could have been vegans. They could have been pirates, or vegan pirates, or Pro-Bacon Hipsters & Eggy Mayo Loyalists with a nasty bigoted streak in them… who cares really? I would rather hateful people didn’t read our blog. This is a place for celebrating living a cruelty-free life and that includes not being cruel to people as well. So, if you’re into being a dick, this is not the right blog for you.

But that’s not really the point of this post. Yesterday, I vented on Twitter about the hatemonger comments. I’ve been all emotional on Twitter these past few days. I can’t explain it. But this stupid thing happened, and then I tweeted about it because I got sick of deleting comments. But then something happened that – in all seriousness – caused me to become verklempt. There’s no better way to describe it.

I came home from dinner to find a series of supportive tweets from readers and other vegan bloggers, not only supporting Meet The Shannons and marriage equality, but being real friends. Since we started this blog, one of the best parts has been joining an online community that is doing such a great job promoting compassion for animals and being more environmentally friendly… and just being more amazingly kick ass. So Thank You Girlie Girl Army, Citizen Radio, Vegan Good Things, Erin Red from Vegansaurus, Kitsch & Kitchen, Laughing Samuari, Vegan Verite, and everyone else who tweeted support yesterday and understanding that the “pursuit of happiness” should include all America’s citizens. We love you guys.

  • I love checking out this site to see what new and interesting things you've been up to (which isn't always recipes). I get a kick out of your enthusiasm and wanting to share what's wonderful with being a vegan. You're wonderful just the way you are; don't change.
As to the haters: there's a lot of personal conflicts going on lately. We've had a boatload at work this week; some serious. Something in the stars maybe?

  • I follow The Shannons loyally, but don't recall ever commenting… well I am commenting now. I LOVE this blog. It makes me smile damn near EVERY single time I read it. The quirky links within the posts and the witty attitude in which said posts are written brightens my day. I am sorry that people feel that attacking someone/something that they disagree with (behind the faceless anonymity of the interwebs no less)is ok. Please know that they are the ones with the problem not you. Thank you for being you and allowing us to be part of you being you!

  • Dude, screw anyone who's so bigoted they can't deal with marriage equality. We don't want them reading here anyway! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I don't twitter, so I had no idea that happened….
but now I feel the need to show my support. For you, the blog, the animals, and especially for LOVE! You guys rock hard.

  • I was away from twitter yesterday, so didn't see any of this, but I would have been there for you too. I love you guys! I live in California, where we have been dealing with the same disgusting, stupid hatred and I am so happy for all the people in New York who now have the option to be able to marry the person that they love. You are terrific! (I didn't want to use awesome, even though you are, because Annie's comment right above this one did :-).

  • Seriously, that's some hateful stuff. I effing LOVE YOUR BLOG and I've only been reading it a short time. You guys are so funny and so creative. I've bookmarked tons of your recipes and your writing makes me laugh out loud. You guys are the bomb dot com!

  • I love your blog! Just recently discovered it and I find it very inspiring and encouraging for the vegetarian to vegan bridge I've been trying to cross for so long. There will always be haters. Keep up the good work.

  • you guys rule. i love the gays. i dont like bigots, they can all take their balls and go home for all i care.

  • I never comment on blogs but felt this subject can not be ignored. You guys are great and I support what you do to make the world a better place. Keep on doing what you do and being who you are. There will always be people that disagree with you and me and we just need to ignore them and keep standing up for what's right.

  • i love your blog and enjoy reading it regularly. it's f-ing sucks, but we have to remember that there are lots of closedminded people in the world i, for one, happen to agree with your stance on gay marriage, so do lots of rad people. you are cool as hell, but it's totally okay to be emotional and get offended by hate, i know i do.

  • Here's a little more love and support coming your way!!! I sincerely hope all the positive comments out-weigh the negative stuff you guys get! I'm kind of shocked actually that you get hate mail on a regular basis just for being vegan! Good grief!
